Begin Your Adventure the Right Way

Just like a real safari, timing matters at Animal Kingdom.

If you’re looking for the shortest waits, head straight to Avatar Flight of Passage at rope drop before the crowds descend on Pandora. But if seeing active animals is your priority, Kilimanjaro Safaris or one of the many animal exhibits will be the best place to begin your day.

The animals tend to be more active during the cooler morning hours, which means you’re more likely to see them moving around rather than resting in the shade later in the day.

Once you’ve charted your course, it’s time to tackle the adventures that draw explorers from around the world.

Attractions Worth the Trek

Avatar Flight of Passage

Guests step into Pandora and climb aboard a banshee to explore the world from Avatar. This 3D ride makes you feel as though you’re truly soaring through Pandora. From the sensation of the banshee breathing beneath you to the sights and smells of the world around you, the immersion is unlike anything else in Disney World.

Kilimanjaro Safaris

Guests get to explore the Harambe Wildlife Reserve with an expert guide on this open-air vehicle tour. Because the animals move freely throughout their habitats, no two safaris are ever exactly alike. One trip may feature a giraffe crossing directly in front of your vehicle, while another could surprise you with a sleeping lion stretched out in the distance.

Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain

Do you believe in the Yeti? You might after this one. Guests climb Mount Everest before racing to escape the legendary snow monster through fast drops, high speeds, and unexpected twists. This one is so much fun for some, but may be scary for others, so check in and make sure it is an adventure you’re ready to face before embarking.

While the rides are fantastic, Animal Kingdom’s greatest strength has always been the experiences waiting beyond the ride queue.

Adventurers may encounter a few familiar faces during their journey through the park, including:

Wildlife Encounters You Shouldn’t Miss

Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

On this trek, guests walk through the Pangani Forest. This self-guided trail winds through lush forest environments where guests may encounter gorillas, hippos, zebras, meerkats, and other fascinating animals along the way.

Maharajah Jungle Trek

Through these mystical trails, guests may discover tigers, gibbons, Eld’s deer, Komodo dragons, Malayan flying foxes, water buffalo, and several species of birds. The detailed theming makes it feel as though you’ve wandered into a forgotten corner of Southeast Asia.

Animal Encounters Throughout the Park

Some of the best animal encounters aren’t on a map at all. In fact, some of my favorite Animal Kingdom moments have happened completely by accident.

Keep your eyes open as you explore. You may spot macaws flying overhead, animals roaming habitats near the trails, or cast members eager to share information about the creatures that call the park home.

After a day of exploring trails and encountering wildlife, it’s worth taking a break and letting Animal Kingdom’s storytellers take the stage.

Festival of the Lion King

See one of Disney’s greatest movies come to life through songs, pageantry and puppetry in this amazing show. Seating is limited, so check the My Disney Experience app for showtimes and make sure you build one of Walt Disney World’s best live performances into your day.

Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!

Through larger-than-life puppetry, music, and stunning visuals, guests can dive beneath the ocean’s surface alongside Nemo and friends.

Fuel for Your Expedition

Animal Kingdom offers some of the most unique food options in all of Walt Disney World. This is a great park to step outside your comfort zone and try something you may not normally order.

Once you’ve refueled, it’s time to venture off the main path and discover a few treasures that many guests overlook.

One of my favorite things about Animal Kingdom is that entertainment isn’t confined to a stage. As you explore the park, you may stumble across live musicians, cultural performers, and interactive entertainment that brings the different lands to life. These unexpected performances often become some of the most memorable moments of the day, especially if you’re willing to slow down and enjoy them.

Building Your Perfect Animal Kingdom Day

A lot of people will try to tell you that Animal Kingdom is only a half-day park. While that may work for some people, I would dare to say that most people that say it just don’t know how to explore everything Animal Kingdom has to offer.

The key is balancing the major attractions with the slower experiences. Ride Flight of Passage. Watch Festival of the Lion King. Walk the animal trails. Take time to admire the Tree of Life.

Animal Kingdom rewards curiosity more than efficiency.

My Ideal Day at Animal Kingdom

First I’m heading straight for Kilimanjaro Safaris. No two safaris are ever the same, and there’s something exciting about not knowing what animals might be waiting around the next corner.

After that I’m heading to Pandora and making a stop at Flight of Passage. Few attractions make me feel completely immersed in their world the way this one does. This is one I could ride over and over and never get tired of.

The rides are incredible, but some of the best moments happen when you stop looking at your destination and start paying attention to where you are. Watch the animals. Explore the trails. Notice the details carved into the Tree of Life.

Because unlike the other Disney parks, Animal Kingdom isn’t really about conquering a checklist.

It’s about the journey.

And if you leave with a greater appreciation for wildlife, conservation, and the world around you, then I’d say your expedition was a success.
